John William Waterhouse (1849–1917) was a British artist closely associated with the later phase of the Pre-Raphaelite revival; in his 1903 oil painting “Boreas” he reimagines myth and nature in a lyrical, sensuous register. In “Boreas,” a young woman is caught in the grip of the north wind—her gown and veil billowing dramatically—as delicate blossoms and daffodils swirl around her, evoking the unseen presence of the Greek god Boreas. The work is significant because it synthesizes the aesthetic precision of Pre-Raphaelite detail with a more expressive, atmospheric Romanticism, heralding a transition in late Victorian art toward mood and psychological resonance. Though the painting fell into obscurity for much of the twentieth century, its rediscovery in the 1990s fetched a record price for Waterhouse, reaffirming his importance in art history.
