John Collier (1850–1934) was a British painter associated with the Pre-Raphaelite movement, renowned for his vivid storytelling and meticulous detail. His 1897 painting "Lady Godiva" portrays the legendary 11th-century Anglo-Saxon noblewoman who, according to myth, rode naked through Coventry to alleviate her husband's oppressive taxation. Collier's depiction emphasizes her beauty and chastity, with her long, flowing hair modestly covering her body as she rides a white horse—a symbol of purity. The serene background features Coventry's medieval architecture, including a Benedictine monastery funded by Lady Godiva and her husband. Notably, the model for this work was Mabel Paul, an artist's model and actress. The painting exemplifies the Pre-Raphaelite fascination with romanticized historical narratives and intricate detail.
